Winter 2009 Projects Underway 11/9/09 Updated photos added of the finished fireplace surround
We have decided to tackle the living room remodel. Phase One-The ceiling is the first step. There is a texture effect we call popcorn. It's just drywall mud sprayed on, no asbestos. There's a nifty tool/scraper we found which makes the job less strenuous. It took us a full day. But not as messy as we expected. After Rich patched a few spots and re-sanded, we primered and painted the room and hallway ceilings. What an improvement. Phase Two will be demolishing the fireplace surround and hearth. We finished that today 10/22/09. The plan is to reduce the size of surround and hearth. Phase Three-There will be a tile surround, new mantel and tile hearth. Phase Four is putting up crown moulding in the living room and hallway. Next, we'll add a decorative trim to all the door frame tops. All the moulding and trim have to be painted and that's a big job. This project should keep us pretty busy for a few months. We will pace ourselves, no need to rush.

More added as the project coninues. 2009 Memorial weekend holiday We returned to the Yakima Valley Saturday & Sunday of the holiday weekend. Nick and Kay were coming too. We thought we'd sight see and have a chance to visit some other of the many wineries in the area. We stayed at Trail Inn RV Park in Yakima. Nice set up, clean, convenient, easy hook-up and reasonable. Our tour began Saturday after breakfast. Rich was the designated driver. We packed a picnic lunch and headed out. The first stop was to see David, Lisa and the boys at Horizon's Edge to check out their selection of wines. Lisa was great pouring the samples of wines and explaining how they were made and blended and aged. We found some we really liked. The next stop was back at Maison de Padgett and have our picnic. Jerry poured there and more wine was purchased. From there we drove to Wineglass , Bonair, and Masset Wineries. Each one was interesting and they all had their own charm. Well, by 4P we were ready to head back to Yakima, tasting and consuming wine began to have it's effects. We relaxed for the evening and left there early Sunday and got into Spokane by 2P.
Monday morning we left early for our boating trip to the Spokane River and a cruise on the houseboat. John, Nichole and Marcus had been in Spokane for a visit with the grandparents-all 4 sets live in the area. They stayed at Nick & Kay's. We took the Smith's boat and spent the day on the river. Marcus loved the boating and was the center of attention. He'll be 2 in August. It was great to see them. Baby #2 is due late August and the Webers are looking forward to greeting her. Yes, a girl and her first name is chosen. It's Arianna.
You couldn't have asked for better weekend weather . It was so nice to have the warmth and sunshine for 3 consecutive days. Hopefully, it will continue and summer will be warm. Please take a look at the photos and remember to click on them to see full size and captions.
Kay's Birthday 5/21 Nick organized a cook-out last night. He and Kay provided the chicken and drinks. Everyone else brought a salad. After dinner and cake and ice cream, Kay opened cards and gifts. It was a coolish evening on the patio, we sang her the Birthday song and enjoyed a good visit. Lynn and Steve shared some of their memories and photos of their Mediterranean cruise just completed. Actually, they were still jet lagged since arriving two days ago. We called it an early evening since ALMOST everyone had to go to work on Friday. Spring 2009 Spokane can finally say it's Spring. After a wicked heavy snow on the 17th of December (30+ inches in 18 hours) it seemed like the glacier in our yard would never melt! It didn't warm up for weeks. Finally, it began to thaw in March. We have had some warmer weather in the last few weeks.
With the warmer weather comes the urge to garden. I don't think we'll do much except keep the grass green and maybe plant a few hanging planters for the deck. I have new roses to plant, too. The front lawn was edged with a cement curb border last fall. We have river rock borders surrounding the lawn. Really easy care. I planted the irises from Linda's yard and they are looking fine. I can't wait for blooms to show in June. Our new trees look OK, but time will tell. I think my desire for a weeping japanese maple will go unfulfilled. The one we have seems to be still in dormancy or dead. The neighbors' tree has leaf buds already, ours has none. It's the second and final try at one. I'll have to figure out what to do in its place. Maybe a water feature. We kept the one from Seattle, and could use it there.
We had a great weekend over April 25-26. Linda's brother David has two wineries. We went to the Maison de Padgett winery for Spring Barrel Tasting held annually in the Yakima Valley wine country. Jerry and Janet Padgett (Linda's parents)let us park the motorhome at their house next to the winery. We had volunteered to help them at the winery with the expected crowds. Rich handed out party beads, like Mardi Gras beads. I used the pipette to serve samples of the new Pleasure Point Peach dessert wine. Considering the record number of tasters, everything went pretty smoothly. There was a good band with good music. Stew and Linda were helping David at his Horizon's Edge winery. Sunday was not so hectic at either winery. We got to see the grandkids Saturday evening and for a little while Sunday. They are growing up so fast. I created an album of photos to go with this article. Click on the photo to see full size photo slide show and text description.
4/26/2009Late Summer and Fall 2008 entries My recent activities have been focused on Mark's passing(4/21/67-7/17/08) and the difficulties , due to complications with notification, surrounding it. With the loving and continuous support from Rich and the love from all Mark's siblings, I got through the hardest days. The group of close friends in NYC kept us informed of their tribute plans there and in the desert festival "Burning Man". I deeply thank those in the wide circle of family and friends who expressed their sympathy to us. Thanks to Kay & Nick for their thoughtfulness. It means a lot. Our 2 week long trip to Seattle (8/16-30) to lend support to Melissa after her illness and surgery occured at the same time. I stayed with Melissa most of the time. We did get to visit with my mother and Mike & Sandy. We had long visits with Stew & Linda and their kids. Rich stayed at Maggies overnight. We held off planning a family memorial in Seattle until Jack returned from his trip. On Nov. 8th we got together at Mike and Sandy's home for a remberance and memorial for Mark. It was a sorrowful reason to re-connect. However, I was grateful to have the support and love surrounding me. There were enough smiles and a few laughs which are hopeful signs of better times to come. We owe a big thanks to Sandy & Mike for graciously offering us their guest room for the days we were in Seattle. Thanks so much to Ann, Kay, Melissa, Julie, Mama and Judy for helping organize for the houseful of family who came to the memorial on the 8th. It made it more meaningful to me because that was the house I brought Mark to after he was born. After numerous tries and searching databases in New Hampshire, I did get an email from David. He was shocked and saddened to hear my news. So, now he knows.
I get my sad moments and I have many regrets. But, life will go on for us all.
Hill's family visit to Papa & Nana in Spokane After a long ride with a stopover at Moses Lake Park, the family arrived late Thursday (7/24) afternoon. We were so happy to see them. The kids are getting so big. Austin is crawling and he has his 2nd tooth coming in. What a happy baby he is. Niclas and Sophia are growing fast. They played in the yard before settling down in the basement for bed. Sophia was so cute when she said they were on a sleep over and had their sleeping bags ready.
Friday morning we packed up the kids and took the boat to Williams Lake at Klinks Resort for fishing and swimming. Niclas and Sophia waited and waited for bites, but no luck. We did see eagles nesting. We headed back in for lunch. The resort had a floating raft with a water slide. Niclas made a bee-line to it and jumped in the water almost before we knew what he did. He really loved it, he went down the slide over and over. Linda jumped in too, she had Sophia with her and they "noodled" around the dock. Stew had Austin and kept him shaded from the sun. We had a nice lunch at the resort restaurant and returned home.
Saturday morning we headed to Cat Tales Zoo. It is about 15 miles N. on Highway 2. There were several big cats in their enclosures. It is a very small zoo. Not at all like Woodland Park or Tacoma Zoo. After that, we drove to Riverside State Park for lunch. We hiked down to the river and crossed the swinging bridge(it doesn't swing) and the kids played on the rocky shore for a while. Then we returned home for more backyard play.
Sunday was the day we planned to go to Splashdown Water Park. It's a family friendly park. We were very pleased with the cleanliness, the life guards were very attentive and watchfull over everyone. They have a kiddie area for the youngest. There are 4 long waterslides, a tube slide, and the FastBall slide which is a sheer drop and is very fast. Rich, Stew, Linda and the kids went down all the slides . Bette had Austin while they were in the water. It was a really fun time. We got home for dinner and prepared for the Ice Cream Party open house we planned to have that evening. We wanted to have Stew & Linda meet our friends and neighbors who have welcomed us into the neighborhood since we moved in last summer.
Monday morning was time for the family to drive back to Bothell. It was a short visit, but packed with good times and sweet moments. We are looking forward to seeing them again in mid August.
Jack's newsHe'll try to keep us in the loop while he's training for diving instructor and Rescue diving located in the British Virgin Islands. He has email jack.e.chamberlain@gmail.com. Summertime-At Last! After a long drippy early Spring, it's finally getting warm enough to spend time outdoors. I made hanging planters for the backyard. I potted petunias for the front steps. The rose plants given to me as gifts are in their pots until I decide where to plant them in the yard. Each one is growing and sending up buds. The nurseries are offering tons of plants, I can hardly keep myself from buying one of everything!! I am still discovering where to shop for the few things I can buy.( Added 6/25)--I folded, we got a Japanese Maple to replace the one that didn't survive transplant earlier this year. Since we're downsizing the amount of yard work, I cannot have a yard as intensely high maintenence as our Seattle yard. I am still unsure what the final yard landscape will look like. We are in the process of taking out some of the shrubs and ratty trees which are just plain ugly and too close to the house. Rich got out the chainsaw and took them out-TIMMBERR watch-out for the lumberjack. Next items for removal-the dreaded junipers, yuck. See photos ---
Rich has not been going overboard in his activities, his back is healing and he's doing exercises on his own as well as building strength and stamina with daily around the house projects. One of the things we have accomplished is clearing out the garage of packed boxes from the Seattle garage and shop. We hung the old sturdy cupboards from the kitchen remodel and Rich stocked them with almost everything unpacked. Funnything, we found duplicates of things we lost track of and had to buy over. Has that happened to anyone else? The previous owner had many outlets in the garage ceiling which made it very convenient to hang shop lights. Rich put up eight 4 ft. lights. All the better to do his woodworking projects.
Since Rich is now off pain meds completely, he's discovered how sore his shoulder is. He had an MRI and it showed he needs a steroid shot to handle the inflammation on the tendon caused by calcification deposits in it. He got the shot today and can already feel an improvement. He'll have therapy sessions and hopefully be better. Yikes, Rich could be pain free, Yea!
This weekend, we are heading out for 8 days. We'll stay at Two Rivers Casino Resort and RV Park. It's on Lake Roosevelt where the Spokane River flows into it. It's about 75 mi N. of here. It has all the amenities we need for a long stay. There's full hook-up, a marina for the boat, gas($$$), groceries and the casino. It's on the reservation and is a neat place to stay. Nick & Kay will stay with us and Katie & Aaron will spend this weekend and maybe over the Fourth. Our weatherman has predicted 80's and 90's for the week. Summer has finally arrived, hooray!
Opening Day of Fishing Our annual trip to W. Medical Lake for Opening Day is now a 45 min. drive. I knew there was a reason to move to Spokane! Melissa and Jack flew here to go fishing with us. The lake was calm, it was still cool though. After Nick and Aaron and Katie launched their boat, we got our boat in the water and motored to a favorite location and began the wait for bites. We found out it would be a long wait. The fish were not going to cooperate.
Bites were few and we lost most most of the ones we did hook. Jack did hook a few small ones and released them. After 1PM, Melissa hauled in a big trout. She was really excited, it was the second fish she ever caught. We measured it at 16+ inches. We decided it was going to be cooked for her dinner. It was delicious. Sunday, we had no better luck. Jack did. He caught a nice one. It was another big 16+ inch rainbow. We brought it home to freeze for eating or smoking later. Bette & Rich will be heading back to try our luck again-since we can go any time we please. We read that the fish biologists believed the water is still pretty cold so the fish are still sluggish.
This will be the last time we visit in person with Jack before he leaves on his extended Asian trip in June. He plans on a 3-4 month travel itinerary and visiting Bali, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia on a self directed back pack trip and meeting up with his buddy Sam. They will travel some and Jack will return to Japan with him and experiece Sam & in-laws with their annual rice harvest. Quite uniquely cultural for Japan.
Kitchen Remodel Video Presenting Our New Kitchen...At Last!! Birthday for BetteThanks for everyone's gifts and cards! Jack sent these roses, Melissa ordered bush roses for April planting. Frank and Liz sent an e-card, very cute. Kay & Nick gave me a digital photo frame, and now I have two. One for the motorhome and one for inside the house. My friend Mary sent a card too. I had a call from Shane and Chris and a video call this evening with Stew, Linda, Niclas, Sophia & Austin. Boy, have the grand kids grown! It was a great time..we miss you all so much. Rich and I will go to dinner Saturday. A really great present would be the news that the countertops are ready..oh well, maybe next week. Material for Trim work is here-we got it done in kitchenThe kitchen doors needed to have the trim applied. We just got it last week. Rich was feeling OK enough and with clearance from the physical theapist, to do a little each day. He took it slow and did it over a couple days. We'll paint it soon with the semi-gloss color the same as the doors and walls. We will be doing the baseboard trim next. Rich did get the cabinet handles put on. They are a weathered nickel in the same pattern as we had for the Seattle house kitchen. The glass shelves were ready on Wed. 3/5 and I got them in the glass front cabinets and put the dishes and glasses into them. I finally made a decision about window treatment for the Living room. I bought the drapes and added the sheers we brought from Seattle. They look just fine. Remodel on track to finish by mid March Our kitchen remodel is looking great. The new Maple floor is spectacular! We will have the countertop template made on Friday 2/29. They say it takes 2 weeks to produce the finished product. Our choice is a laminate by Wilsonart with a texturized surface in a light sandstone desert rocks colors. The plumber will follow and drop in the new sink and connect the dishwasher-YEA!!!! I swear, I'm getting dishpan hands! I ordered the glass shelving for the glass front cabinets, they'll be done in a week. I have been re-stocking the cabinets with food and all the bowls, pots & pans, etc. There are still a few more touches to finish. We'll get the rest of the trim around the doors as soon as Rich is able to. See the photos of the flooring.
Speaking of Rich--His recovery is going very well. Right now, he's out of the constant pain he had before surgery. His therapist has him doing more exercise routines on a daily basis. She comes by three times a week and has said he's made good progress. His main emphasis is strengthen his "core" which helps everything over all. He's still wearing the brace for at least the next 3 weeks. Driving is also out for a while, too. He's got "cabin fever" and is really looking forward to getting out of these 4 walls. Attempt to photograph the eclipseI thought I would try, but my camera isn't equipped to shoot astronomical sights. Luckily enough the clouds were blown clear for a nice view of the complete eclipse. I remember staying up very late to see one when I was younger. We got to spread out our blankets in the back yard in Mountain View CA. in the mid 50's. Rich has returned homeAfter back surgery on Wed. and 2 days in the hospital, Rich is home to recuperate. The prognosis is good and he's expected to recover easily. There will be limitations on activity for a couple weeks. Then the physical therapy for strength and some flexibility muscle training will start. He'll be wearing the brace for 6 weeks. Right now he's happy to be home. The visiting nurse will come by to check him a couple times weekly. He's hoping to be more active and almost pain free as a result of this operation, we've got a busy retirement to live! Antonio finished putting up cabinets today--Yea!Look at how great they look. It's so amazing to see the improvement. We'll finish painting this weekend. The countertop guy will come to measure after the drawer base arrives next Tue. or Wed. It will be a week or so to get the countertops fabricated and installed. As soon as that's done, the plumber will set the sink and disposer, and hook up the dishwasher. The electrician can then finish the lighting. I will have under cabinet lites as well as over cabinet to show off a few of the bean pots. There will be in cabinet lighting in the glass front ones. Antonio comes back to put down the floor and do the trim work and the remodel is finished. We expect it to be mid March at the latest. Hooray!
Rich's Operation will be on Wed 2/13 at 9:15AM in Holy Family Hospital. It's expected to take 3 hours. He'll be staying just overnight. That's because his surgery is minimally invasive and will cut down on the hospital stay as well as significantly shorten the recovery process. He's ready for it to be done and is hoping for a good outcome. We're keeping our fingers crossed for speedy recovery and less chronic pain.
Here's Austin at 4 mo. on 1/30. I just had to show it!
Progress so far..... What a change we see today with paint on the walls. We had to seal the new drywall with primer, then we painted. The color is a warm tannish brown, sort of like a latte color. Yummm. We'll get to the other parts of the wall and ceiling after we wipe them down with TSP for a clean surface. But we needed to get this much done by Thursday. Antonio will probably start hanging the upper cabinets. I can't wait!!
Cabinets arrived today The kitchen cabinets were delivered today. We're disappointed that the one base drawer cabinet had a significant scratch right on the front of a drawer, we rejected that base. The cabinet coordinator will send for a replacement ASAP. This may hold up the whole job. Our fingers are crossed. We have to store them in the heated garage to bring them to house temps before installing. In the meantime, our contractor will be repairing the walls and Bette & Rich will prime and paint them. We'll paint the remaining walls after taking the rest of the bad wallpaper off.
Other developments:
Rich is scheduled to have another surgery for his back problems. He'll go in on Feb. 13th. This time the operation will be to fuse two vertebrae in his lower back. The disc between them has slipped significantly and there's no other treatment but fuseing them because of his previous surgery. He'll have a minimally invasive procedure and should be in for just overnight. The recovery time is 6 weeks of little activity as well as wearing a brace for about 3 months. Hopefully, he'll be almost good as new by April. Kitchen Remodel Begins! Our contractor has removed all the cabinets in the kitchen. He took out all the soffits above the cabinets. Already, the space looks roomier. He left the sink and dishwasher hooked up. The plumber will turn off the water service to both and then take out the sink from the cabinet. Then the new cabinet goes in. We're having the electrician put in an outlet under the sink for our new garbage disposal and make all the outlets above the counter into GFI per code. The utility sink and upper cabinet in the laundry area were removed to make room for the new stack unit. The plumber will also fix the water lines in the laundry area so the new stack washer/dryer can be moved into there. The electrician will install can lights and wiring for undercounter lighting as well as an outlet for accent lighting above the cabinets. The new cabinets will be delivered on 1/25(Fri.) and hopefully be installed within next week. The wood laminate flooring is due any day. That will be installed after the cabinets are done. Our countertops will be the last big item to do. Of course there are dozens of little things that will have to be done in the meantime. We're very excited. I'll put up photos as work progresses. Thanks for looking in...Bette Christmas 2007Merry Christmas to everyone!
We had a pretty busy time getting the interior decorated in time for a coffee/dessert Open House for our neighbors to celebrate the season on the 8th of Dec. We had 4 couples over to get to know them better and have them all see what we've done. We let them know we'll have the contractor here in Jan. to start the remodel of our kitchen. We all watch out for each other, and we wanted them to know who the "strangers" will be coming in and out of our house. The next Saturday we had 8 other couples over. These friends and relatives are the ones we play Bunco with about every month. We wanted to have an Open House since we'll not see everyone until mid January for the next party. I had baked several desserts, cake, gingerbread, cookies and candy. It was a success and fun to do.
We had plenty of time to shop for Christmas gifts this year. Since retirement, we can go to the store anytime. It was really nice to not be hurried and have to deal with the crush of holiday shoppers at the mall during the evenings and weekend. We got our boxes mailed in plenty of time. Everyone got them way before Christmas. This is the first time we had everything done before the 20th. We received gifts and packages from the family in Seattle and Maine early, too. It was fun trying to guess what they were as we piled them under the tree.
Jack came to visit for Christmas for several days, from the 23rd to early AM the 26th. We all drove to Lake Coeur D'Alene, Idaho to see if we could view the Bald Eagles there at Wolf Lodge Bay. They come from Canada to feed on spawned Kokanee salmon in the lake. The drive is about an hour. We took the scenic route and saw a few perched and flying. Jack got some photos of a heron, whitetail deer on a nearby hillside and a flock of turkeys in a field. We stopped off at the new Cabelas Super Store and showed Jack the massive amount of camo clothing available. We returned home in time to greet Kay & Nick with Ken, who was visiting for 3 days too, as well as Nichole & John w/Marcus. They hadn't seen our house before. We all went to Nick's cousin Bev & Terry's home for Christmas Eve dinner. There were at least 29 family and friends there. Food was everywhere, lots and lots of food. We rolled home by 10P and crashed into bed.
Christmas morning we opened our gifts. Santa was very generous. We had plenty to unwrap. Thank you family for being so thoughtful. We called the families and wished them Merry Christmas. We had a hearty Christmas Brunch at Nick & Kay's. Yes, more yummy food. About noon, we returned to our house to let the dogs out and rest up for dinner at the Smith's. This meal was the highlight. Kay prepared a delicious beef tenderloin, garlic smashed potatoes a la Rachael Ray, ambrosia fruit salad, and mixed veggies. For dessert there was chocolate silk pie. Everything was so tasty, we all ate til stuffed. We had a gift exchange and had lots of laughs. Then we settled down to play a rousing domino game called Wildfire. It was a different take of playing than Spinners. After a tentative game or two, it was lots of fun. Jack & Ken's flights were early AM so we had to get home by 9 and get some sleep. Just as we arrived, there were flurries of snow falling. By morning there was at least 3 in on the ground and secondary roads weren't plowed yet. The freeway was not much better. It was slow going to the airport, Jack barely made the flight with just a few seconds to spare. He got back to Seattle where Stewart picked him up and dropped him home.
Today, we relaxed and watched movies. We stayed snug here by the fireplace and were lazy all day. We still have some homemade candy from Melissa & Jack to nibble on but it's going fast. Luckily, there's plenty of fruit from Brunch, so we won't just eat sweets all day. We'll take the Christmas stuff down by New Years. If the snow stops long enough or it rains, we'll take down the outdoor lights. Then we tackle the remodel job. We expect it to last 4-6 weeks, maybe.
